Making and writing

Divide the work, then compare it.

Three views of the same object: where the illustrated sections fall, which folios a palaeographer assigned to which hand, and how the written forms are built out of ordered units. Choose a hand or build an encoded word to inspect the comparisons.

01 / The shape of the book

Section map

Every folio in the transcription, in order, coloured by section. Select a square to open that folio in the reader.

The section names group folios by their illustrations: plants, stars, bathing figures and other recurring page designs.

02 / Attributed hands

Compare the five attributed hands

Lisa Fagin Davis's proposed attributions, as committed to the project's hand table. Select a hand to see photographs of its pages, isolate them on the map, and compare the recorded measurements.

Chapter 7 / A Routine in Red

The red stars, page by page.

Each row follows the source-recorded colour sequence from top to bottom on one page. The underline marks two successive markers with the same treatment.

Red = red centre. Pale = non-red source class. Source: Stolfi’s tables, as analysed for Chapter 7. The missing f109–f110 sheet interrupts the surviving page order.

03 / Writing patterns

Fourteen ordered slots

A word in the transcription can often be described as a sequence of optional units in a fixed order. Build one, or type one and see it tiled through the slots.

Compose

Pick a filler in any column. The bar behind each filler shows how often it fills that slot among covered words.

Compose a word by picking units above.

Parse

Pattern and coverage

Word ordering and unequal distributions at word edges recur across the attributed groups, with local variation. The fourteen-slot pattern is a descriptive model of the encoded forms.

04 / Beside other corpora

Within-word predictability

The recorded positional-grammar battery, measured on the manuscript and on comparison corpora. These are stored values; the full bench with source records is on the testing page.
